Why did you want to become a Vocalo Storyteller? Radio storytelling has always been an important part of my life. But mostly the $3,000 cash prize.
Your piece in 20 seconds:
How easy is it to be a serious (not ironic) fan of classical music? Is it any harder than being a serious (not ironic) classical musician? My piece interweaves these two narratives: the lonely classical music fan alongside the never lonely musicians of Chicago’s Spektral Quartet.
Why did you decide to tell this story?
Next to rap and country, classical music may be the most misunderstood genre of music. No one’s going to magically gain an appreciation of classical music by listening to my piece. But they might want to come to a concert with me. (That’s the real reason I did this story — to get dates.) (And the $3,000 cash prize.)
In what ways are you a better storyteller and/or producer? I’ve become a much better interviewer. I’ve cut the word “awesome” out of my vocabulary. I’m less afraid to not know what I’m doing. I finally understand what an equalizer does. And, next time, I won’t leave my editing till the last minute. Promise.
